Tools & Calculators

Tools & Calculators

Evidence-based tools to help you make informed decisions about soil, firewood, and trees.

What Are These Tools?

These calculators are built on established science and government sources, so you can work out what you need rather than guess. Whether you are balancing a compost pile, buying firewood, or tracking a young tree, each tool turns the science into a practical answer.

Every tool is clear about its limits and cites its sources. The estimators give you a sensible range to work with; the converters give exact figures. None of them replace a professional assessment, they give you a well-grounded starting point.

All tools are for educational use. They show you what the science says, and you decide what is right for your own situation.

Soil & Compost

Compost C:N Ratio Calculator

Estimate the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of your compost mix and see if it is balanced for the 30 to 1 target, before you build the pile.

Use Calculator →

Soil Amendment Calculator

Work out roughly how much compost or organic matter to spread over a bed, based on its area and how much improvement it needs.

Use Calculator →

Soil Texture Estimator

From a simple home jar test, estimate whether your soil is sandy, loamy, or clay, and what that means for how it drains and holds water.

Use Calculator →

Firewood & Bioenergy

Firewood Quantity Calculator

Estimate how many cords you are likely to need for the season, based on how you burn, your home, and your climate.

Use Calculator →

Cord & Volume Converter

Convert between full cords, face cords, cubic metres, and stère, so you know exactly what you are buying and can compare prices fairly.

Use Calculator →

Firewood Seasoning Time Estimator

Get an estimated drying time as a range for your wood, based on the species, how you split it, and your stacking conditions.

Use Calculator →

Firewood Moisture Target Checker

Enter a moisture meter reading and see whether your wood is ready to burn against the 20 percent target, or needs more drying.

Use Calculator →

Trees

Tree Growth Rate Calculator

Enter two trunk measurements from different dates and work out the growth rate, so you can see whether a young tree is establishing.

Use Calculator →

Stem Diameter & Girth Converter

Convert between trunk girth (a tape around the trunk) and diameter (across it), so you can record whichever you measured.
